• Question: Do you believe in aliens? And if so, why do you think we haven't found them yet?

      @10kingstonm- I see no reason why aliens couldnt exist somewhere, because the universe is so huge that there must surely be a planet apart from earth capable of supporting life!

      However, the sheer size of the universe is the reason why we probably will not be finding them for a while yet- unless they are technologically advanced enough to come and find us, that is…

      I think something will exist somewhere, but I don’t think it will be a proper alien like ET – it will probably look nothing like anything we’ve ever seen on Earth. They will be hard to find though – we’ve never even seen the majority of the universe. Even within our own galaxy we hardly know anything about the more distant planets.

      I do believe in aliens – there are so many billions of planets out there that there must be someone living somewhere!

      But they are so far away – so very very far away that it would take thousands or millions of years to get there, even if we travelled at the speed of light! And because we’re so far away, when we look at these planets, we’re not really looking at how they are this very instant – the light from those planets takes millions of years to reach our eyes, and show us how they looked like millions of years ago – so by the time we ‘see’ them, the planet could very well have exploded and disappeared! It’s mainly this crazy distance that makes space exploration so difficult.

      Also, even on planets that can sustain life, that life could just be like bacteria, or worms in the ground – nothing like what you see on Star Wars or Star Trek! There’s no guarantee that we would ever be able to spot them from a space ship…

      If you believe there are other worlds circling other star, and that they have energy, water and time, then life will emerge and evolve. But the distances involved preclude us ever visiting these neighbours, or them coming to see us.
