Sleep is defined as a naturally recurring state characterized by reduced or absent consciousness, relatively suspended sensory activity, and inactivity of nearly all voluntary muscles.
During sleep, we actually go into and out of different cycles, usually 4 or 5 per night: rapid-eye movement REM and non-REM. This is the case for all mammals and birds. (On a side note, my initials spell REM!!). REM occurs every 90 minutes and is the the proper stage of sleep here most muscles are paralyzed. During these different cycles different neurotransmitters secreted and your heart rate changes.

The main way to achieve sleep is by lying down and closing your eyes!! There things to do to get better sleep such as make the room dark, no caffeine, take a warm bath…

Check out dolphins, whales and seals though: http://marinelife.about.com/od/Whales/f/How-Do-Dolphins-Sleep.htm – they sleep with half there brain while the other half is still awake!! How cool is that?!

Hi 12parrk- Ruth’s answer is great. Me? I work really hard all day, and then have to run around after my children when I go home. By about 10 o’clock I’m done in…

Yep, I achieve sleep pretty much straight away just by laying down and turning the light off!

PB, I think you mean Ruth’s superb answer!
