I quite often go to scientific conferences – these are meetings of lots of scientists from around the world working on the same subject, so that they can meet each other and discuss their results. These meetings are hard work but they are a lot of fun, as well as giving a chance to travel and meet new people. It’s also a good way to meet people to work with in the future.
Love it! At one end I go to International Conferences on my virus all over the world and meet some of the greatest scientists, at the other I do primary school visits to talk about science to 5-11 year olds. I can tell you, the 5 year olds ask much tougher questions!
Scientific events are fun! If it’s a big conference with lots of really clever scientists, then it’s fun to talk to people who work on the same questions as you do, and see if you can come up with some good ideas together. Sometimes the best ideas come from talking to someone who does a completely different type of science! And in some events (like this one) we get to talk to people who aren’t scientists, and we get to take our noses out of our experiments, step back a bit and look at science from a different angle, which is always quite refreshing!
Conferences were scientists present their work are a good way of getting to see what other people are doing in the same field and to meet other scientists.
I also help out with communicating my science to people not in my field such as the public or people at school. I’ve helped out at a couple of science festivals which are really fun because not only to you get to share our passionate you are about your subject but also get to see what other fields are doing like complexity science or earth sciences….
I go to scientific conferences, as well as schools to give talks. They’re both a lot of fun and you can learn a lot about how explain your work to all sorts of different people. This ability to explain things to all sorts of people is vital to a scientist.
