I work on HCV, but the one I’d really like to see gone is Malaria. Not just because of the people it kills, but because of the long term misery it causes those who survive it.

As I study HIV like viruses, I have to say HIV! We have good HIV treatments but they are expensive, so it’s hard to get them out there and working in developing countries. A real, cheap cure which could eliminate HIV in one dose would be fantastic.

I would probably say one of the infectious diseases that spread easily, especially in disaster zones with overcrowding and poor sanitation. Malaria, dengue, cholera…one of those. These things often come up after a place has been hit by a natural disaster, like an earthquake or a hurricane. The people there already need all the help they can get to stay alive, and when disease starts spreading it makes helping them a lot more difficult. It feels like hitting someone when they’re down, and I don’t like it! So if I could make one of those diseases disappear it would be great.

I would like to cure malaria- I’ve had it before and its awful. It affects and kills millions of people every year and is proving very hard to get rid of- mainly because of the way it spreads (mosquitoes are not easy to control!)
